for foreign medical Graduates

Wishing to Practice in Danmark

Membership of the DMA

In principle, membership in the Danish Medical Association is open only to medical doctors authorized to pracitce medicine in accordance with the Danish order concerning the Practice of Medicine Act. This rule also applies to foreign members; to become a member of the DMA, you must be authorized to pracice medicine in Denmark.

Admission to DMA membership of medical graduates of an EC memberstate or of other foreign medical graduates with Danish authorization entails no special requirements of having obtained a post as a doctor.

Membership in the DMA is obtained by written application submitted to the DMA Registration Department.

However, admission to membership of a foreign medical graduate with limited (temporary) authorization requires a position in a hospital or similar institution and, if necessary, at residence and work premit.

Authorization to practice medicine

The autorization to practice medicin in Denmark are given from the National Board of Health.

Courses and tests at the medical faculties in Denmark are conducted in the Danish language.

Language Schools

In order to follow the courses at a language school financially supported bv the Authorities, students must have a Danish social security number. Courses at such schools cost approximately 450 DKK each. Private courses are available at price of approximately 300 DKK per lesson (1994 prices).

Eine Sprachschule (nur für Dänisch als Fremdsprache), die in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stadt Kopenhagen jetzt seit 1971 hunderte von ausländischen Ärzten die Dänische Sprache beigebracht hat. Dauernd um die 25 ausländische Ärzte als Schüler, die hier Dänisch lernen. Insgesamt um die 450 Schüler, 34 Lehrer.

Financial support

It is not possible for the Danish Medical Association to grant financial support for course tuition, accomodation, living expenses, etc. Appicants are referred to social service centers or the Danish Refugee (Dansk Flygtningeh¾lp).

Unemployment funds

In order to recieve unemployment benefits, the doctor must have been a member of an unemployment fund for at least 3 years and have had 26 weeks of work within the 3 years of membership. Admission to an umemployment fund is only possible for a doctor who has a post or who has been promised a post.

This rule does not apply to the following if they habe been members of an unemployment fund in their country or origin:

Doctors for other EEA countries can be admitted into an unemployment fund if they start work within 8 weeks after they have left an unemployment fund arrangement in another period of 3 months is required to be admited as a fulltime insured member.

The following countries are covered by the EEA Agreement:

Belgium, Denmark, United Kingdom, Finland, France, Greece, netherlands, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Germany and Austia.

Only sitizens in the above countries as well as stateless/expatriated individuals or refugees living in an EEA country are covered by the EEA Agreement.

These doctors have the right to receive unemployment benefits according to current regulations in Denmark. Membership and work periods from the country of origin are included.

In addition, specific regulations are in force with regard to members who have been insured in the Faroe Islands.

No other countries have accreditation agreements.

Further information may be obtained from the AAK (the Unemployment Insurance Fund for University Graduates in Denmark).

Courses

Only members of the Danish Medical Association may participate in educational courses organized by the DMA. A catalog of courses is published every 6 month by the Secretariat for Continuing medical Education and sent to members of the DMA. In addition, one-day courses are advertised in the weekly journal of the DMA (Ugeskrift for Lxger). All courses are conducted in the Danish language.
